Graduation Guide for the MSc ODE specialization BFOS, Arctic & Wind

This is a guideline for students who will graduate within the graduation specialization Bottom Founded Offshore Structures, Arctic & Wind of the Master of Science (MSc) Offshore and Dredging Engineering. The PDF-version of this guide can be found here.

General Information
Within the curriculum of the MSc. Offshore and Dredging Engineering, the graduation consists of 2 separate course codes:

  • OE5685-15 Problem Analysis Thesis, which is worth 15 ECTS
  • OE5690-30 Thesis, which is worth 30 ECTS

Together these 2 courses comprise the complete graduation package worth 45 ECTS. This is equivalent to approximately 8 to 9 months of time spent.

How to start your Graduation
Within the specialization BFOS, Arctic & Wind you are recommended to carry out your graduation work at a company. You are yourself responsible for finding a suitable position at a company either in the Netherlands or abroad and to apply for that position. Nevertheless, you may always contact the BFOS, Arctic & Wind coordinator, Jeroen Hoving, to ask for advice on graduation topics or advice on the companies to contact that best match your specific interests and/or preferred topics. To make an appointment with the coordinator, please contact the secretary of the section Offshore Engineering, Ms. Marysa Dunant (M.C.Dunant@remove-this.tudelft.nl, faculty of CEG, building 23, room 2.91).

Alternatively, you can opt for a graduation position at the university, with the Section of Offshore Engineering. Do however take in consideration that a graduation position at the university does not involve a fellowship, which is customary for graduation work at a company.

Approval of the Graduation Topic
Upon receiving a proposal for the graduation topic from a company, please send an email with a short description (max. 2 pages) of the topic to Prof. Andrei Metrikine (A.Metrikine@remove-this.tudelft.nl). The topic will be either approved or you will be requested to make an appointment for a discussion of the proposal. As soon as your topic is approved, Prof. Andrei Metrikine will inform you as to who will be your university daily supervisor. Your university daily supervisor will be your first point of contact in the university throughout your graduation.

Graduation Procedure
Upon approval of the graduation topic, please send an e-mail to secretary of the section Offshore Engineering Ms. Marysa Dunant (M.C.Dunant@remove-this.tudelft.nl), stating a tentative title of your graduation work, the details of the company involved as well as your starting date.

During your graduation there will be several meetings with your graduation committee: a kick-off meeting, multiple progress meetings, a green-light meeting and the final graduation session, consisting of the exam and the public presentation. You are expected to organize these meetings in consultation with, and only after the agreement of, your university daily supervisor. To schedule the kick-off, progress and green-light meetings, as well as the final graduation session, please send an e-mail to Ms. Marysa Dunant (M.C.Dunant@remove-this.tudelft.nl), including a CC to your university daily supervisor. After each meeting has been scheduled, it is your responsibility to make sure that all members of the graduation committee are informed about the date, time and location of the upcoming meeting. Note here that any reservations of lecture or meeting rooms are to be made by Ms. Marysa Dunant.

Kick-off meeting
The kick off meeting generally takes place approximately 4 weeks after starting at the company. The student should prepare a short presentation (4-8 slides) containing:

  • An introduction to the graduation topic and the problem statement,
  • The company objective and final aim of the graduation,
  • The approach to be taken, based on the preliminary literature study, and
  • A preliminary planning for the full duration of the graduation

Progress meetings
Next to the kick-off meeting there are usually 2 or 3 so-called progress meetings with the full graduation committee present. During these meetings, the student is expected to give a presentation on the progress made. Not later than 1 week prior to each progress meeting, the student is requested to send a digital version of the draft report to all members of the graduation committee.

Green-light meeting
The green-light meeting generally takes place approximately 4 weeks before the final graduation day and is meant for the graduation committee to determine whether the quality of the work done is sufficient to graduate, i.e. to receive a grade for the graduation that is equal or higher than 6. Therefore, not later than 1 week prior to the green-light meeting, a final draft of the MSc thesis is to be submitted to all committee members.

Note that the green light cannot be given unless you have successfully completed all your courses. Once the graduation committee has given the green light, please hand in form 5 at the office of Ms. Marysa Dunant (at least 21 days before your graduation). The form can be found here.

Final Graduation Session
Both a hard-copy and a digital version of the final MSc-thesis should be submitted to all committee members not later than 1 week prior to the final graduation day.

The procedure during the final graduation session is as follows:

  • 1 to 1,5 hour oral exam in the room of Prof. Andrei Metrikine (faculty of CEG, room 6.59) starting with a 15 to 30 minutes technical presentation with a focus on the obtained results. After the oral exam, time is reserved for internal discussions of the graduation committee.
  • 30 minute public presentation in a lecture room at the faculty of CEG; this is expected to be an inspiring presentation meant for the general public, which allows for questions by the public.
  • Diploma signing ceremony in same lecture room following the public presentation.

Graduation Committee
A graduation committee is always composed of, but not necessarily limited to:

  • The graduation professor,
  • 1 member of the section Offshore Engineering, who may act as the university daily supervisor,
  • 1 member of a section other than the section Offshore Engineering, who may act as the university daily supervisor, and
  • 1 company representative, who acts as the company daily supervisor.

Note here that the graduation professor is responsible for the graduation committee. As a student however, you are allowed to propose additional committee members, on the condition that their expertise is relevant and/or useful for the graduation.
