Hydraulic Engineering

Welcome to the website of the Department of Hydraulic Engineering of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences of Delft University of Technology.

Website Purpose

We have designed this website to inform and facilitate current students, prospective students, alumni, scientists, practitioners, media, colleagues and our staff on our field of focus. Our homepage offers access to section-related information that we control and update, to our direct "Delft" environment and it offers a login to our staff.

Of the vast amount of information that you may find we mention the highlights. Under news you will find recent and aged articles, while agenda provides the most recent activities and events of our department. Under research you will find current and recently completed research project descriptions often with access to publications. Under education you will find information for high school students, university of applied science students (pre-masters), foreign students, bachelor students (master programs) and master students (graduation projects and reports). Also all the hydraulic engineering courses are given here.

To contact persons within our department or other department related matters various members of the departmental support can be contacted. What is more, contact and accessibility will give more general information to find us. Please take a look at vacancies when you are looking for a job or when you want to do research in hydraulic engineering.

We offer access to the Virtual Knowledge Centre - Hydraulic Engineering, designed for anyone who is active in the field. Many links on this portal points to the central library of Delft University of Technology. The aims of the knowledge center are (1) to provide integrated access to library and faculty information resources per subject and (2) to facilitate sharing of the knowledge contained within the user group through use of discussion forums. The primary target users are students and staff of Civil Engineering.

The Department of Hydraulic Engineering generates and dissiminates academic knowledge in an internationally highly acknowledged Dutch tradition. The aim is to solve present-day social problems, such as the reduction of flood risks and the development of coastal zones. Not only typical lowland-related problems, such as dike failure and evacuation in case of floodings are dealt with, but also global phenomena, like sea level rise and highly populated coastal areas. Furthermore, the department treats the behaviour of fluids, offshore technology, design of hydraulic structures and logistics of harbours and waterways. To support finding innovative solutions, own advanced experimental facilities and computational models are being used.In an ever-changing environment our curiosity is triggered to study the underlying processes, in order to find sustainable solutions and to educate future generations. The department closely cooperates with industry. In many sections staff of various companies work also part-time for the department of hydraulic engineering. A list of companies with staff at the department is available

The department exists of the following research and organizational sections.
