Traffic management and traffic flow theory

Growing mobility has severe impacts on the functioning of the transportation system. Since building new infrastructure is costly and slow, and road pricing keeps running into politically difficulties, solutions are to be sought elsewhere.

The Traffic Management chair of the Transport & Planning department focuses on cost-effective solutions to improve road network operations by optimizing the use of the available network infrastructure. This solution direction, generally called Traffic Management, is a cost-effective approach to improve traffic operations in regional networks by informing road users and by guiding and controlling traffic flows. Challenges

Societal and economical urgency

Growing mobility has severe impacts on the functioning of the transportation system. While car usage is expected to increase with 35%, the truck traffic demand is expected to increase with 100% before 2020. Read more>>

Traffic management as a cost-efficient solution direction

Traffic management is a cost-effective approach to improve traffic operations in regional networks, being one of the main pillars (next to building new infrastructure and road pricing) of Dutch transport policy.  Traffic management aims to optimize the utilisation of the network capacity by achieving an optimal balance between traffic demand and network supply. Why traffic management works

Vehicular traffic network dynamics are a-typical. Contrary to many other networks, network production (average rate at which travelers complete their trip) deteriorates once the number of vehicles in the network has surpassed the critical accumulation. The Network Fundamental Diagram clearly reveals this fundamental property, which underlying mechanisms are pivotal in the design of effective traffic management measures. Read more>>

Why informing alone is not enough

While the information and support to the individual traveller is increasing exponentially, the idea that the need for guiding or controlling traffic is decreasing is becoming more and more widespread. Read more>>

Traffic Management research programme and facilities

The research programme of consists of a number of interrelated main research themes, which focus on the operations and analysis of the traffic networks. Read more>>
