Building Engineering

The Master track Building Engineering aims at the structural and technological part of designing a building: how to translate the architectural design in a safe, rational, sustainable and comfortable building? You will learn all about the technical performance that a building has to achieve, you will come to the notice of traditional and innovative building materials and methods, and learn to analyse the influence of the building function on your structural design. You will be supplied with an extensive amount of theoretical knowledge that will help you to start you work as a professional designer in a responsible way. Almost every lecturer in our group has worked in practice or is still part-time involved in an engineering firm: thus you will be assured of a good preparation for engineering practice.

Final Thesis and specialisations
By accentuating your course choices and final thesis, you can further specialize in the following areas:

Within the group Building Engineering several PhD students are working on actual and relevant research questions. such as: Responsibilities in Building, Structural Design and the Adaptive Reuse of Existing Building StructuresPrefabricated Concrete in Buildings and Computational Design. This research is centered around the theme's of the 3TU programme "Speerpunt Bouw". This inter-university programme (Delft, Eindhoven, Twente) addresses the big questions that Dutch building society will be confonted with in the coming decades. The themes Building Engineering would like to address are:

  • Computational Design
  • Structural Design and Safety
  • Production Assembly and Technology
  • Special and Complete Structures
  • Building Physics and Technology

Master students are encouraged to join the research initiatives of Building Engineering.

Stevin-II Lab
Besides facilities for desk research and design studies, we also use the Stevin-II lab for exploration and verification research. In the lab a unique and complete collection of measuring and testing equipment is available, as well as the technicians that assist you in the use of thes facilities.

Dispuut / Office space for students
U-BASE (Stevin II room 1.35, next to lecture hall G down the stairs and then left) is the student association for all Master students following the Building Engineering track. With excursions, study trips, symposia, but also by crically following our education, U-BASE contributes to the quality of the education. Many MSc students working on their thesis use a specially furnished common workshop.
